So, in case you haven’t heard, we are in a recession. What does this mean for the average person? I have no idea what it means for the average person, I only know what it means for me. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am VERY GRATEFUL I still have a job, but I won’t lie: brown bagging is boring. As a cost-cutting measure, I have been packing my own lunch rather than buying it. I’m saving tons of money, but I feel like I am shopping for a three-year-old. I buy things like string cheese, baby carrots, goldfish crackers (big buyer of goldfish crackers), granola bars, olives and little fruit pies. I go down that special “lunch box” aisle in the supermarket and check out what they have this week. I am contemplating visiting Costco for the first time in years. (They sell HUGE boxes of goldfish crackers.) So far in the way of sandwiches, I have had turkey w/pesto (yum), cheese, tuna fish and the classic PB&J (super YUM). On a special day, I might get a hard-boiled egg or little tiny oranges. This week, my special treat is individual portions of mango pudding, whipped up right here in my own kitchen. I pack all of this in my special lunchbox:

It was a present. I love it. Its only drawback is that it’s metal, and so doesn’t do well in the rain. For these wet days, I have this:

This lunchbag and I have history. This little blue bag was my companion on my Inauguration Day adventure in Washington DC. My uncle gave it to me. It’s waterproof and has this really cool separate zipper thing for my sandwich. It is also useful for protecting books from the rain. I still have to buy my daily Pepsi, though. (Unless Costco has really huge boxes of Pepsi…)
I am regressing. My life has become centered around the contents of my lunchbox. Like the primitive hunter-gatherer, I am totally focused on food. Help me.

I still use my Dr Pepper lunchbox you gave me years ago. And yes, I take it to work. Others who smirk are merely jealous.
