Blanca

I just cannot live without hamsters in my house. So, I lost no time getting a new one after Bella passed on. I decided to go to the SPCA. Yes, they do have hamsters there. The lady on the phone told me they got 15 in one day. It broke my heart to see them there. Why do people dump hamsters? They don't require a lot of care. They have simple needs. I wanted to take them all, but I controlled myself. After looking at all the little hammies, I chose this one:

Actually, she chose me. She climbed right into my hand. Even the guy who took care of her at the shelter was impressed. As you can see, she is white. Very white. I try to give my hamsters names that suit them, so I usually wait a few days to see what they're like, if any unusual traits stand out. In this case, there is one thing that you immediately notice: she's WHITE. So I ran down a list of possible names that reflected her whiteness: Snowball, Snowflake, Snowpea, Blizzard, Flurry, Whitey (not Whitey). The next thing you notice are her eyes (She's a true albino, don't you know.): Pinky, Pinkeye, Pinkster...maybe not. Then, I decided to go international. Her name is Blanca, which is "white" in Spanish. So I stuck with my original concept, but I think I jazzed it up a little.

So far, Blanca is very opinionated. She is young, just a baby I think, not more than two months old. She still has that "babyness" about her that young hamsters have. She is very curious AND she's very active. Here's some video I shot of her on her first day.

This is just minutes after getting her home...right out of the box. I think I have my hands full with this one.

  1. Wow, she made herself right at home *at once*. Impressive and a beauty too. I can't wait to meet her.
